World Dumpling Day, held annually on September 26th, celebrates the rich history and cultural significance of dumplings and their variety that ranges from Chinese dumplings, Nepalese momo, Poland’s pierogi to Brazil’s coxinha.

It is a day for food lovers to feast on dumplings from different cuisines, created by wrapping a filling in dough and then boiling, steaming, frying, or simmering. The day also aims to promote the universal joy and connection that these versatile, bite-sized treats can bring.

Our Chow Luck Club celebration this year brings you back to the roots to where dumplings began - China.

THE INVENTION OF DUMPLINGS

Dumplings are said to have been invented by a Chinese medicine practitioner called Zhang Zhongjing during the Eastern Han Dynasty (206BC-220AD).

During a harsh winter, people suffered from the cold, and Zhang prepared a mixture of herbs, mutton, and spices, wrapping them in dough and steaming them to provide nourishment and warmth.

Mutton is considered a warming food in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), and its inherent “yang” energy is believed to provide energy and help the body maintain heat, particularly in colder weather.

These dumplings didn’t just help people stay warm and fill their bellies, but also improved their blood circulation and prevent frost bites because of the herbs Zhang added.

The term “dumpling” first appeared in an English text from 1600, and other cultures developed dumplings for different purposes, such as to preserve meat or to make use of excess grains.

Within China, the variety of dumplings, from the folding techniques to how they are cooked, varies greatly across the country.

Another popular style of dumpling is the wontons, a Chinese cuisine staple, that are usually filled with minced meat and wrapped in a dough skin before being eaten fried or in soup.
