Popular Takapuna cafe eatery Catch 21 has announced that it will be closing after the coming weekend, and returning after extensive renovations as “something completely different”.

Among the dishes that Catch 21 is famous for are the lobster scrambled eggs, lobster and crab fettuccine pasta, and creamy seafood chowder.
According to owner Robin Lee, the last day of operation will be Sunday, 29 June 2025, before Catch 21, as we know it, is gone for good.
“We will be closed for at least two weeks for a total transformation,” Lee said.

“The eatery will be coming back under a different name, different concept, but with greater certainty of who we are and what we stand for.”
Lee said, despite Catch 21 being popular, people were still “unclear if it was a cafe or a restaurant, or something in between”.
Catch 21 overlooks Hurstmere Green, and is a stone’s throw away from Takapuna beach.

It’s star dishes include the lobster scramble eggs (served with sourdough bread, chopped chives, pickle fennel and red onion, finished with Togarashi chili), seafood chowder (creamy base with clams, mussels, squid, prawns, fish, bacon, spinach, served with toasted garlic ciabatta) and lobster & crab fettuccine (creamy bisque base, lobster & crab meat, tomato, red capsicum, shallots, chili, garlic, fresh herbs and parmesan cheese).
Also popular are the slow-cooked beef rib (pumpkin puree, Korean sweet plum chili sauce, baby potato, baby carrot, pickled red onion, and toasted pistachio) and lobster open burger.

“The new restaurant will have a whole new menu, but most definitely no pasta,” Lee said.
“This will be the last week for our customers to have their favourites from our existing menu.”
Catch 21 opens early, serving breakfast, lunch, and coffee, and from Thursdays to Saturdays, offers a dinner service as well. Fully licensed and provides a range of beer, bubbles and wine.
Lee said he will announce the new restaurant’s name, concept and menu closer to its opening.
