Hidden away on Durham Street West in the Auckland CBD, Hazy Tiger is a modern Korean-Asian fusion restaurant that brings bold flavors and a lively ambiance to Auckland’s dining scene.
Located in the space which once housed the Japanese restaurant Kushi, this hip spot feels like a natural sibling to the popular Soul Night - perfect for an after-work catch-up with colleagues or a fun night out with friends.
From the moment you walk in, the neon-lit, slightly moody interior sets the tone for a night of culinary exploration. While it might not be the ideal setting for a family dinner, it’s perfect for a vibrant outing with a group of friends or coworkers.
The bar is a highlight here, with a talented barista crafting cocktails that wow the senses. While I don’t drink anymore (and found myself a little envious of those who indulged), I couldn’t help but wish for a mocktail menu to match their innovative concoctions.
My food experience
Hazy Tiger’s menu leans heavily on seafood and small plates, making it an excellent choice for those who love sharing and sampling a variety of dishes.
The cured salmon dish - Salmon Ceviche - was a stand out, bursting with freshness and flavor. The prawn and pork skewers were another favorite, grilled to perfection.
In a controversial twist, I devoured the prawn whole, shell and all, appreciating its perfectly charred texture.
One dish that surprised me was the deep-fried corn, tempura-battered and unlike anything I’ve tried before. It’s these creative touches that sets Hazy Tiger apart and make each visit a unique experience.
The best part? The prices are friendly to your bank account, with dishes ranging from $8 to $16. Even the indulgent Beef Eye Fillet Slices come at a very reasonable $16, making it possible to enjoy a full spread without breaking the bank.
Final thoughts
If you’re a fan of bold flavors, fresh seafood, and a fun, trendy atmosphere, Hazy Tiger is a must-visit. The portions are small, encouraging you to try a little of everything, and the ambiance strikes a balance between energetic and relaxed.
While it may not cater to a family-friendly crowd, it’s an ideal spot for a group of friends or a team outing. I’m already planning to bring my girls here for our next night out in town.
Whether you’re in the mood for good food, great drinks, or a lively vibe, Hazy Tiger has it all. Just be sure to save room for those skewers - they are worth every bite.
