Chow Luck Club will celebrate the Lunar New Year and usher in the Year of the Snake with feasts, markets, walking food tours - and a new street festival in the central city.
The events will run for about a month from 18 January to 12 February 2025.
A big highlight will be the first-ever Bao and Boba festival, which Chow Luck Club will present jointly with our partners Auckland Council and Heart of the City.
More than 30 restaurants, eateries, and other central city businesses will participate in this exciting and fresh campaign for the Lunar New Year.
On Saturday 1 February, Lorne Street will be closed to traffic for a Lunar New Year Midtown Street Party that will run from 11am to 9pm with live entertainment, activities, and performances at Te Hā o Hine [Khartoum] Place.
Diners can visit multiple eateries for their Lunar New Year feasting experience and be guided by Chow Luck Club festival ambassadors on the day.
Between 20 January and 9 February, diners can visit participating restaurants and vote for their favourite shops to win $100 vouchers.
Some of these eateries are offering bespoke menu offerings and culinary experiences to celebrate the festival.
A Chow Luck Club Lunar New Year Foodie Market will kick off the month-long celebrations on Saturday 18 January at ParkCity, St John’s.
The market will feature stalls selling ethnic delicacies, festive food, and a spectacular lion dance performance.
On Tuesday 28 January, experience tuan’nian fan - a must-have yearly “reunion” feast for Chinese families to strengthen bonds and celebrate the new year.
The reunion dinner will be hosted by Chow Luck Club jointly with the Heart of the City at Lao Guangzhou Hot Pot in MidCity Mall where the food meets storytelling.
The event allows participants to experience the traditions and rituals of ushering in the Lunar New Year. It will include a walk to SkyCity to witness the arrival of Cai Shen Ye, the God of Fortune, and watch the firecrackers show and lion dance performance.
On this day, we say goodbye to the Dragon and welcome the Year of the Snake.
The ever-popular Lunar New Year walking food tours, which Chow Luck Club will deliver on behalf of Heart of the City, returns on January 29, 30 and February 12.
The Lunar New Year, which falls on 29 January this year, is generally celebrated for 15 days with each day having a special meaning and traditions to honour.
The ninth day, 6 February, is regarded as an important day as the heavenly birthday of the Jade Emperor is celebrated.
That day, which also happens to be the Waitangi Day public holiday, Chow Luck Club will be having our annual Lunar New Year dinner hosted jointly with our partner Treasure Kitchen Greenlane.
Highlights of the dinner include a 10-course auspicious feast by Chef Sam Ng, including a yu sheng prosperity toss salad ritual, and a thrilling lion dance performance.
