Diwali, the Hindu Festival of Lights, falls on Thursday 31 October this year - and heading to Delight Spice in Newmarket for its vibrant buffet is a great way to celebrate the occasion.
Journalist-turned-restaurateur Sandeep Singh and his team of chefs tantalise taste buds with their spread of iconic Indian dishes and favourites - at a very wallet-friendly price.
The spread is filled with traditional northern and southern Indian favourites, and Singh’s specially curated menu also includes Delhi-style butter chicken, Indian momos, lamb keema, chicken yakhni pulao, and breads like naan and the soft, fluffy leavened bread called bhatura.
The lamb keema is made from minced meat cooked in a medley of aromatic spices and herbs and is a popular dish in northern India that is best enjoyed with the naan, bhatura or puri.
The buffet also features a range of Indian vegetarian dishes from bombay aloo, chana masala and vegetable korma.
One star dish at the buffet is the murgh makhani, or Delhi-style butter chicken - one of India’s best-loved curries. This iconic dish is said to have had its origins in a Delhi restaurant in the 1950s, created by a chef using recipes from his native Punjab.
“We try to let our guests enjoy authentic Indian cuisine and indulge in a delightful culinary experience,” Singh said.
“This weekend we will be putting out an extra special Diwali-inspired selection that pays homage to the vibrant flavours of Diwali.”
For an extra $7, guests will also be able to have a serving of a special Dhaba-style goat curry that has been slow-cooked for hours in a rich onion tomato gravy, yoghurt, and double tempered with special masala.
The Delight Spice Buffet runs on Saturdays and Sundays from 11.30am to 3 pm. It is priced at $25 per person.
