If you asked me to name a dish I find most comforting, I’d probably say it’s pho. This simple noodle soup commonly found sold by vendors at the street stalls in Vietnam has grown in popularity around the world. We’re lucky to have some great ones here in Auckland to warm our hearts and tummies, and these are where I get some of my favourites.
The Courtyard Vietnamese Café 55 Remuera Road, Remuera
This bright and friendly café combines classic cabinet food with some of the most delicious Vietnamese food in Auckland.
They’re known for their ox tail pho with amazing depth of flavour, but they also serve a wonderful traditional beef pho with raw beef that cooks in the broth, as well as bean sprouts, herbs and a wedge of lemon.
If you’re looking for something non-pho, the curries are also incredibly addictive. There is free parking for customers in the car park next door, make sure to ask about this at the counter.
Try it Out Restaurant 79 Atkinson Avenue, Ōtāhuhu
This no-frills restaurant has been feeding South Auckland since the late 80s. It continues to be incredibly popular today drawing in visitors, and one of the tastiest dishes on their huge menu is the pho.
Try it Out has a selection of different pho dishes with our favourites being any that feature the rare beef as this stays super tender when gently heated in the broth.
Don’t forget to try their tasty drinks on the side too including the coconut and lychee milk shakes.
Nét Việt Restaurant 3/8/14 Rocklands Ave, Balmoral
Nét Việt may not be as well-known as other pho spots, but it boasts an addictive, aromatic broth that is well worth a visit.
Their special pho has a moreish mixture of textures due to the varied toppings of rare beef, sliced beef steak, beef balls and tendons.
They also offer simpler versions of pho without the tendons. While it’s not known for the ambient atmosphere, this no-frills option is one of the few traditional Vietnamese options in the area and we highly recommend checking it out.
Madam Yen 31 Clyde Road, Browns Bay
New kid on the block Madam Yen has already gained a reputation for being one of the best new Vietnamese restaurants on the Shore.
This colourful eatery serves Hanoi style food including both modern takes and traditional dishes.
Their pho options include the option of braised beef, raw beef or chicken.
Try chicken for a light and addictive broth that goes beautifully with the rice noodles if you’re looking for a change from beef.
The pho also has the option of small or large bowls to suit any appetite.
